Building stronger relationships between organisations and local communities
Positive relationships with local communities are important to how organisations operate, manage change and plan for the future.
Whether you're preparing for a new project, managing an existing operation or looking to improve relationships with the people around you, understanding local communities and communicating with them effectively can make a real difference.
At Nia Avanna, we provide specialist advice and hands-on support to help organisations understand the people and places around them, engage with local communities, manage concerns and build more constructive working relationships.
How we can help
Every organisation, community and project is different.
You may be planning changes that affect local residents, dealing with concerns about your operations or looking to take a more considered approach to how your organisation communicates and engages with the people around it.
You might already have established relationships and experienced colleagues, but need additional capacity, specialist advice or an independent perspective on a particular issue.
We work alongside organisations to understand their circumstances, identify what needs attention and develop an approach that takes account of both community expectations and organisational priorities.
Our consultancy services
1. Community engagement strategy and planning
Developing an approach to engaging with local communities that reflects your organisation's objectives, the circumstances of a project and the people who may be affected.
This can include identifying who needs to be involved, considering when and how to engage, developing engagement strategies and supporting their implementation.
2. Community intelligence and stakeholder research
Understanding the local area, the people who live and work there, the organisations and groups that influence local opinion, and the issues that matter to them.
We can help you develop a detailed picture of the local community, identify relevant stakeholders, understand existing relationships and use that information to inform your decisions and engagement activities.
3. Community relations and issues management
Building and maintaining constructive relationships with residents, community groups, local representatives and other stakeholders.
This can include reviewing existing relationships, responding to concerns, advising on sensitive issues and helping organisations improve how they communicate and engage with local people.
4. Planning and project communications
Supporting organisations with communications and engagement relating to proposed developments, planning applications, operational changes and other projects that may affect local communities.
From preparing engagement plans and communication materials to supporting stakeholder meetings and community consultation, we can help you explain proposals, understand local concerns and maintain relationships throughout a project.
5. Strategic advice and additional support
Sometimes you don't need a complete strategy or a large consultancy project. You need an experienced person to discuss an issue with, review your approach or help your team manage a particular situation.
We provide flexible advisory and project support, working alongside your existing team and adapting our involvement to what you need.
I'm Emma Smith, founder of Nia Avanna.
I've spent more than a decade working in communications and community engagement across the public and private sectors. My career has taken me from supporting local policing teams with community communications to leading engagement across more than 400 sites for one of the UK's largest construction businesses.
Having worked within organisations as well as independently, I understand the operational and commercial considerations that influence decisions, alongside the expectations and concerns of local communities.
My approach starts with taking the time to understand your organisation, the people and places around it, and the circumstances you're dealing with before recommending how best to proceed.
I believe effective community engagement should help create a more constructive relationship between organisations and communities, where people are listened to and treated fairly, and decisions take account of both community needs and organisational realities.
Ultimately, I want to leave every project having helped build stronger, more respectful relationships between an organisation and its local communities, relationships that can continue to develop long after my involvement ends.
